Post traumatic stress disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe mental health condition that can affect anyone who has experienced a traumatic event. Although it is most commonly associated with war veterans, any type of trauma can trigger the symptoms.

People who have PTSD may experience flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive thoughts or images, avoidance of memories of the trauma, feelings of emotional numbness, and difficulty concentrating or sleeping.

Recognizing the signs and symptoms of PTSD early on is essential to more effectively receiving treatment and managing the condition.

Traumatic experiences at work can cause PTSD and be covered by workers’ compensation.

Employers must be aware of the potential emotional trauma their employees may face in the course of their jobs.

Causes

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that affects an individual after they have gone through a traumatic event. This could be anything from natural disasters, extremely traumatic accidents, violence, and assaults. Common symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, and feelings of hopelessness.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, up to 10 percent of people will be diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder in their lifetime. Generally, women are more likely to suffer from it than men.

PTSD and Workers’ Compensation

Workplace-related PTSD is a very serious condition that can cause long-term physical and psychological damage.

Fortunately, workers’ compensation is available to those who suffer from PTSD caused by an event that occurred in the workplace.

While PTSD is often associated with directly participating in or witnessing a traumatic event, it is also possible to be diagnosed with the disorder without experiencing such an experience.

Unfortunately, there has been an increase in severe accidents and violence in the workplace that can cause fear and anxiety among employees. This is a very concerning matter that needs to be addressed to ensure a safe working environment for everyone.
